9/11 Jazz Concert and other Sept Jazz events

I had the great fortune to be asked to volunteer at The Heart of Jazz for 9/11 concert, held at Somethin’ Jazz club on 52nd Street. There were 40 performers who played over the course of 6 sets from 7pm to 1am. The club was packed all night, and perhaps because there was no cover charge since it was a 9/11 memorial event, it was standing room only. With the talent on hand, it was no wonder why!

Of the many highlights, seeing Sheila Jordan was a big stand out. At 86, Ms. Jordan is a grand dame of Jazz. She played with Charlie Parker, I was told. Meanwhile, this lady certainly still knows how to swing! She led the crowd in a group scat, which was so much fun.

When Roseanna Vitro got up to sing, I was thrilled to be in the audience. She is my singing teacher, and she blew the roof off the place! She’s such a passionate singer, you can hear it in every beautiful note. She gave an incredible performance.

Finally, Judy Niemack has such a bewitching sound, it was a pleasure to be able to hear her perform live – for me, it was the first time I’ve had the opportunity – previously I’d only heard recordings of her singing. Also, her lovely husband Jean Francois accompanied with his guitar.

There are two notable events on the Jazz calendar for September that I’m aware of…

Roseanna Vitro will be playing Joe’s Pub on FRIDAY, September 26th. This event is for the release of her new CD, Clarity. It promises to be an amazing night, so get your tickets now!

The Judy Niemack Quartet will be playing Jazz at Kitano, on FRIDAY, September 19th. Judy is in town from Europe, where she lives most of the year, so if you want to hear this lovely songbird, take advantage of the opportunity. 🙂
